Native Roots

This is a plan to systematically replant the grounds of the University of Wyoming with native grasses and flowering plants, thereby removing the water, fertilizer and labor intensive practices of planting and maintaining Kentucky Bluegrass and non-native flowers. The image to the left is a detail of a model of the area known as Prexie's Pasture, designated to be replanted with indigenous flowers and native prairie long grasses.

Five sites were selected on the University of Wyoming Campus; the 2 left images are maps of the campus and the designated replant zones.

The 3rd image is of the Prairie long grasses and flowers to be planted; these are suitable for our climate and desert/grassland ecosystem.

The last 2 images are of a model of Prexie’s Pasture; this central zone’s Bluegrass will be replaced by Buffalograss, providing a similar base for the activities the site supports, without requiring as much watering and virtually no mowing. The first stage of the project includes replanting the end sections of Prexie’s Pasture with native flowers and Praire long grasses.
